Hair Transplant: The Ultimate Care for Baldness

Hair transplantation by Biberie Clinique can be effectively seen as the surgical procedure offering a permanent solution to baldness. This practice is one of microsurgery and can be performed in a hospital, clinical, polyclinic surgery environment, and so on; finally, it can also be offered by any specialized medical center prepared to implement such an operation.

The microsurgical procedure ensures that the hair transplant is done, unlike with traditional surgery, through minimal surgical techniques. This operation is presented as the permanent solution for male pattern baldness, which we clinically known as “androgenetic alopecia”. Among those who would find this capillary transplant surgical procedure useful, there could also be those who lost their hair due to illness or accidents.

FUE technique for hair transplantation.

The capillary grafting procedure was developed years ago, but it really got popular ever since the mid 90’s, getting more use and development in terms of techniques which are still used today all over the world.

In the 1990s, the FUT technique dominated the hair transplantation scene; it was replaced by the FUE technique in the 2000s, which was fully established within surgeries in 2005. Over the years, this technique has been perfected, while preserving its basic principles.

Nowadays, the FUE technique is considered the gold standard in capillary grafting procedures, being the most advanced technique so far and being the one that guarantees the best and most natural results to patients suffering from alopecia. One of the main credits of the FUE technique is that it doesn’t leave unpleasant scars, with the few ones caused only visible through magnifying glasses. Furthermore, it has very short predicted healing times compared to other techniques.

The evolution of the medical devices used for performing this technique has given greater success to surgeries featuring them. This diversity of new tools has allowed the FUE technique to be performed in various ways:

  • Trasplant Zaffiro FUE.
  • Trasplant DHI
  • Trasplant SOFT.
  • Transplant Without Saving.
  • Transplant Beard
  • Trasplant Eyebrow

Use of anesthetic during hair transplants.

Before extracting the hair follicles from the scalp region called “donor region” and forming the sites that will receive them in the “receiving region”, local anesthesia must be performed. Being injected directly into the scalp, it takes only a few minutes to start working.

For patients who are afraid of syringes and the small pain they cause, there are other alternatives to be employed without problems. A quite effective example is sedation.

How is a hair transplant performed?

Basically, there are 3 major stages in the hair transplant procedure:

  1. Extraction of hair follicles: the FUE technique extracts one follicle at a time.
  2. Planting of hair follicles.

But the whole process of hair transplantation is performed within the scope of 7 phases:

  1. Visit: at this stage the doctor talks to the patient and creates the plan, based on his hair needs.
  2. Preparation: the scalp area is sterilized and anesthetics are applied.
  3. Extraction: the hair follicles are extracted from the patient’s donor region.
  4. Engravings: following the natural direction of the patient’s hair, the grafts in the receiving region will be performed.
  5. Transplant: the hair follicles will be inserted into the receiving sites following the position and the natural angle of the patient’s hair.
  6. Postoperative processes: they include the medication and treatment of the transplanted area, in order to accelerate its recovery.
  7. Postoperative care and hair washing: for the following 15 days from the transplant, washing must be done with the maximum possible care.

Extraction of hair follicles.

The FUE technique allows for greater aesthetic success due to the fact that each hair follicle is taken individually and directly from the tissue, without removing strips, but using small circular incisions. The risk of scarring and other complications is eliminated thanks to this last technique.

The needles used must be appropriate for the size of the hair follicles. Normally we use needles ranging from 0.7 mm. at 1.0 mm, allowing the extraction of 3 to 5 hairs for each hair follicle. The procedure’s success is also based on the sharpness of the blades to be used. Any follicular damage must be avoided in order to have a successful transplant.

Preparation of the receiving region through incisions.

In the popular FUE technique, these incisions are made through the use of certain steel scalpels, considering the precision, direction and natural angle of the hair (allowing the transplanted hair to grow in their natural direction). After making a hundred incisions, the steel scalpels are replaced. In the sapphire FUE technique, the blades have smoother and sharper features, as less blades are used in the same operation.

Planting of hair follicles.

The last phase of this surgical procedure is the implantation of the hair follicles collected in the receiving region. This process is performed by inserting the hair at an angle of 40 to 45 degrees into the previously made incisions, all the while following the natural hair growth direction.

Other aspects about hair transplants.

  • Normally it is said that hair transplant can be done to people between 20 and 60 years of age, but this is not mandatory. There are cases of much older patients who wanted transplants at all costs. In these cases, if the specialist considers that examinations and clinical tests are suitable, the procedure will be performed.
  • This process has an average duration of 6 to 8 hours, but in some cases it can last less or longer.
  • The reason for doing this in a fully equipped hospital is to face possible complications quickly.
  • A specialist doctor and at least 3 technicians are present during the widespread intervention.
  • After the operation, the patient can see early results after 6 months, fully noticing them after 18 months from the transplant.

The FUE technique and its advantages.

  • Permanent solution to moderate male pattern baldness.
  • The transplant’s end result is a more natural and dense hairstyle.
  • Patients experience minimal discomfort and pain, and the operation ends without leaving bad external scars.
  • Recovery times after the surgical procedure are quite rapid, allowing the patient to return to his or her normal routine after just a few days.
  • The patient’s donor area will not suffer any aesthetic change.
  • 98% of the grafts will grow according to the patient’s natural features.

What does it take to succeed with the FUE technique?

Proven experience: the hair transplants specialist should have many years of experience gained by working with hundreds of different patients, with both normal and rarer features. This experience helps to identify the characteristics of each patient in order to realize the plan with the correct technique for them.

Professionalism with procedures and patients: only a team consisting of specialists and assistants will be able to perform this surgical procedure. A team with these skills will be able to examine and make the correct diagnosis for each patient, giving then advice and instructions on what should be done before and after surgery. Finally, an excellent specialist team not only thinks about the surgery’s final result, but also about the patient’s overall health.

Mastery: a good hand and aesthetic understanding can give the operation’s final result a natural look that is compatible with the patient’s face.

Understanding the patient: the first phase of this process is the medical examination. In this stage it is very important to understand the patient and consider him as an integral entity, in order to develop an attack plan which follows his needs.

Other donor regions increasing transplant success.

Sometimes, the head’s rear region does not have sufficient hair density to cover the entire recipient region, thus making hair transplants unsuccessful. In order to perform a correct procedure which is as successful as possible, other parts of the body can be used in order to obtain hair follicles.

The beard: in patients with a weak donor region, or when baldness affects a large area, the use of beard hair follicles is considered an alternative source. These follicles are denser and have a longer growth phase than those found in the back of the head. For these reasons, these hairs are transplanted in the medial and superior region of the chierica. However, these are not the best option for transplantation.

Body hair: these are considered a third donor option, especially the chest ones, splitting specialists among many thought schools. Like beard ones, chest follicles are thicker than those in the back of the head, but have a shorter growth phase. For these reasons, they cannot be transplanted into the head’s frontal region. Another thing to consider is that these hair may fall after 2 or 3 years from surgery, however, this is not entirely certain.
